Purpose – Increasing systemic volatility, geopolitical fragmentation, and digital interdependencies have intensified the vulnerability of global supply chains (SCs). While research on supply chain resilience (SCR) has expanded rapidly in recent years, the literature remains conceptually fragmented across capability-based, network-structural, and performance-oriented perspectives. This study aims to consolidate recent SCR research and develop an integrated conceptual understanding of how disruption exposure, structural conditions, and adaptive capabilities jointly shape resilience in supply chain networks (SCNs).
Design/methodology/approach – Following the systematic review methodology proposed by Tranfield et al. (2003), this research synthesizes peer-reviewed journal articles indexed in Scopus between 2020 and 2024. A total of 94 publications were analyzed with regard to their theoretical grounding and methodological rigor to identify key resilience drivers, capability configurations, structural interdependencies, and research gaps across global SCNs.
Findings – The review shows that SCR emerges from the interaction between disruption exposure, structural network conditions, and the enactment of resilience capabilities. Structural characteristics such as network topology, governance structures, and institutional constraints shape system vulnerability, while capabilities enable coordinated responses to disruptions. However, important research gaps remain regarding tier-specific vulnerabilities, disruption propagation mechanisms, and an integration of structural network perspectives with dynamic capability approaches.
Originality – This study develops a theoretically integrated, multi-layered capability architecture of SCR that consolidates fragmented capability-based, structural, and performance-oriented perspectives. By conceptualizing resilience as an emergent system property arising from the interaction between disruption exposure, structural conditions, and adaptive capabilities, the framework advances conceptual clarity and provides a foundation for future research on resilient and viable SCNs.
